A beginner’s guide to sushi etiquette

New to sushi? A few simple habits make every piece taste better β€” and nobody minds if you forget one.

Soy sauce: fish side down

Dip nigiri lightly with the fish side down, not the rice. Rice soaks up too much sauce and can fall apart.

Hands or chopsticks β€” both are fine

Nigiri is traditionally eaten by hand in one bite. Sashimi is always eaten with chopsticks.

Ginger cleans the palate

Pickled ginger (gari) is eaten between different pieces to reset your taste β€” not on top of the sushi.
